Moutai's Title of National Alcohol Rejected by State
After four years of effort, renowned Chinese alcohol brand Moutai failed again in its ninth attempt to register trademarks using guojiu, meaning "national alcohol", although the company has used the term in promotional slogans for years.
 
The Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce recently announced its decision to reject Moutai's application, saying it would lead to unfair market competition if the company possessed the trademark, because the expression "national alcohol" implies that Moutai is the best liquor in the nation.
 
Shengda Games Launched Right Protection War of the MIR2
Aiming at 60 mobile games similar to MIR2, Shengda Games sent a bulk e-mail of Infringement Warning Letter to 200 objects, including game companies, channels and media which are suspected of infringing the intellectual property of MIR2 during their operation and promotion. Shengda Games targeted a number of game developers like PLAY 800 and a number of mobile game channels and accesses.
 
KDX Group and Royal Philips Build and Share the 3D Patent Pool
On January 8, Kangdexin (KDX) Group and Royal Philips (the Netherlands) signed a strategic agreement in Las Vegas, America on in-depth strategic cooperation in 3D sector. The two parties will jointly develop techniques and build and share the “patent pool” for them to license and share each other’s IP rights. What’s more, Royal Philips licensed it’s IP right of open hole 3D technology to KDX Group, enabling it to exercise the exclusive license right in China (Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan included).
 
Sohu Wins in the Final Judgment Against Baofengs Piracy
In January, Beijing Intellectual Property Court upheld the decision of the first instance in the case of Sohu.com (Sohu) v. Beijing Baofeng Technology Co., Ltd. (Baofeng) against the latter’s infringement of the right to network dissemination of the webisode, High-End Crush. The court confirmed that, with a highly malicious intention, Baofeng’s act constituted direct intentional infringement and it should pay Sohu RMB 125,000 for Sohu’s economic loss and other reasonable costs.
 
Alibaba Forms Anti - Counterfeiting Alliance With Mars and Samsung
Chinese e-commerce company Al ibaba Group has formed an anti-counterfeiting alliance with international brands, including Louis Vuitton, Samsung and Mars. The partnership, “Alibaba Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance”, has around 20 members and will leverage big data and the latest in anti-counterfeiting technology to continue the global fight against fakes, according to a statement released by Alizila, Alibaba Group’s official news site.
 
8 Unfair Competition Lawsuits Filed by AutoNavi
AutoNavi Software Co., Ltd. (AutoNavi Software) and AutoNavi Information Technology Co., Ltd. filed 8 unfair competition lawsuits and claimed RMB 75 million against Beijing Didiwuxian Technology Development Co. , Ltd. (Didiwuxian) and Beijing Xiaojukeji Co., Ltd. (Xiaojukeji), which made false propaganda and, in collusion with Zhongzhi Project Outsourcing Service Co., Ltd. and Mr. Hu, former senior manager of AutoNavi Software, drew 6 employees who held the core trade secrets of AutoNavi Software to provide services for Didiwuxian and Xiaojukeji, infringing the company’s trade secrets and constituting unfair competition.

On February 6, Alisports officially announced its cooperation with the Council of Asian Winter Games. Alisports has obtained exclusive new media copyright in Mainland China of the 8th Asian Winter Games. It’s the first time for Alisports to set foot in the sector of winter sports.
 
IQIYI Accuses CMCC Liaoning of Piracy
Holding that CMCC Liaoning played the Journey of Flower and Silent Separation without authorization, infringing iQIYI’s copyright, iQIYI sued CMCC Liaoning to the court by claiming that the latter infringed the former’s information network transmission right and should compensate RMB 800 thousand in total. The Haidian people’s court of Beijing accepted the case.
 
Jinritoutiao Appeals to the Court Against Unfair Competition of IFENG.COM
Jinritoutiao (今日头条) appealed to the court against the unfair competition of IFENG.COM, holding that the other party maliciously provided content from IFENG.COM containing advertisements and claiming for RMB 20 million. On January 24, the People’s Court of Haidian, Beijing accepted the case. Jinritoutiao requested that IFENG.COM immediately stop malicious traffic hijack and other unfair competition acts, make an apology and compensate for RMB 20 million economic loss.
 
Xiaomi and Dolby Achieves Patent Cooperation
Xiaomi announced that i t has signed a Patent License Agreement with Via Licensing to use the patented technology in Via’s Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) patent pool, which enables consumers to enjoy high-quality audio with high compression efficiency, reducing the amount of data consumed and processing power required. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dolby Laboratories, Via Licensing Corporation has more than 50 years of experience in technology license and innovation license in sectors including audio, broadcast, wireless and automobile technology. Last year, Via filed lawsuits against OPPO and vivo because of their infringement on its AAC patent right, and the above two companies could not sell their phones in India until they paid the license fees.
