Statistics from the Beijing government show nearly 600 local companies in the city's technology hub Zhongguancun received a total of 95.6 million yuan ($14.8 million) in government aid to encourage patents in the past four years.

Begun by the city government in 2007, the funding program is designed to improve awareness and management of intellectual property.

Companies in the high-tech area received 5,000 yuan for every invention patent granted. Each company can receive up to 1 million yuan a year.

In last year alone, 185 companies were awarded a total of 21.7 million yuan.
