Review of battles over online copyrights infringement

2011/08/23

The legal battle between Chinese writers and Apple is not the first controversy related to online copyright infringement of Chinese authors. Google and Baidu's libraries have previously been accused of similar misdoings.

October last year, The China Written Works Copyright Society slammed Google Books for infringing on Chinese writers' copyrights, accusing the company of scanning about 18-thousand Chinese books without the authors' consents. After three months of negotiations, Google admitted its wrongdoing and made a public apology.

In March this year, it was Baidu's turn with about 50 Chinese writers publishing a joint letter accusing Baidu Library of infringing upon their intellectual property rights. After talks between the two sides, Baidu apologized to Chinese writers and claimed that it had deleted almost all the unauthorized documents. But a representative for the alliance of Chinese writers is still not satisfied, claiming some works still remain.
