Fujian and Taiwan Talked over Geographical Indications

2011/11/07

The first Fujian-Taiwan seminar on geographical indications (GI) was held in Quanzhou. 160 representatives from national trademark authorities, Fujian Administration for Industry and Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce (Taiwan) Intellectual Property Committee as well as right owners participated in the seminar.

During the three-day seminar, experts and scholars from both sides discussed issues on GI protection systems and trademark disputes between the two sides. Four GI owners shared their experience in GI management and utilization. Taiwan scholars also made speeches on how to promote turnover by utilizing GI marks.

Chamber of Commerce (Taiwan) Intellectual Property Committee Chairman Lai Wenping said that since 1991, the two sides have began to exchange opinions on trademarks. He hoped that through this seminar, both sides could understand each other’s protection status and explore methods to enhance the protection and promote cross-strait economic exchanges and cooperation.

In recent years, Quanzhou government has attached great importance to the cultivation and protection on trademarks and geographical indications. Currently, the city has owned three geographical indications and another eight are being reviewed by the trademark authority. [Chinese version is available on szb.qzwb.com]
