Sichuan: Ya'an made a major breakthrough in patent applications

According to the latest statistics released by the State Intellectual Property Office, as of October 2011, Ya'an has received 209 patent applications, up 51.4% and making a major breakthrough in this regard.

Among all those applications, 92 were related to inventions, 99 were on utility models, and 18 were associated with designs.

After a major breakthrough made by the city last year in patent applications, this year, it has achieved another big success in this regard, with filing amount increasing by two times compared to 2010.

In recent years, the IP awareness of local enterprises has been greatly improved, and they considered patent application as an important way to protect their indigenous innovations.

Xu Mengjia, director of the municipal standing committee, stressed in his speech at the third party congress that relevant departments should help entities further improve their abilities in creating, transforming and industrializing their innovations.

He suggested that the number of patent applications was actually a clear indication of the regional technology development capacity, and could also imply the process of transformation of economic growth mode.

An official of the municipal IPO said that the soaring applications also benefited from IP strategies formulated by local governmental departments and a better environment where innovations were strongly protected.
