The statistics released by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) show that in 2011, patent grants in Yunnan Province were 4,199, rising by 9.84%. Of these patent grants, invention patent grants, utility model patent grants and design patent grants were 1,006, 2,217 and 976, respectively increasing by 54.29%, 9.43% and -14.80%. Service patent grants were 2,741, accounting for 65.28% of the total amount of patent grants, of which patent grants from enterprises, colleges and universities, scientific research institutions and governmental groups were 1,838, 551, 300 and 52, up 36.55%, -5.49%, 37.61% and 15.56%, respectively; non-service patent grants were 1,458, taking up 34.72% of the total grants. 

Last year, patent applications in the province were 7,150, mounting up by 26.6%. Applications for invention patents, utility model patents and design patents were 2,796, 3,175 and 1,179, respectively growing by 19.85%, 43.54% and 7.18%. Service patent applications were 5,005, occupying 70% of the total amount. Patent applications from enterprises, colleges and universities, scientific research institutions and governmental groups were 3,191, 1,204, 539 and 71, rising by 49.04%, 34.08%, 22.78% and 9.23%; non-service patent filings were 2,145, taking up 30% of the total number of applications. 

As of December 2011, the accumulated number of patent applications across the whole province were 50,397, of which invention, utility model and design patent applications were 15,480, 21,861 and 13,056, respectively taking up 30.72%, 43.38% and 25.91% of the total application amount; the accumulated patent grants in the whole province were 30,875, of which invention, utility model and design patent grants were respectively 4,661, 16,274 and 9,940, respectively accounting for 15.10%, 52.71% and 32.19% of the total granted patents; the effective invention patents in Yunnan Province were 3,061, ranking 21st in the whole nation. Invention patents for per 10 thousand people were 0.67 pieces. 

The statistics number showed that, in 2011, patent application quality was improved obviously and the structure was more rational. Applications for invention patents accounted for 39.10% of the total applications, fillings for utility model patents took up 44.41% and applications for design patents merely occupied 16.49%; enterprises gradually became the main innovative body and patent applications filed by enterprises took up 44.63%, 6% higher than 37.93% in 2010; invention patent grants rose by 54.29%, 17% higher than 36.97% in 2010. [Chinese version is available on SIPO.gov.cn]
