Beijing: every 10,000 people own 26.8 patents for invention

As of the end of the year 2011, the valid patents for invention in Beijing reached 52,522 and the number of invention patents for every 10,000 people hit 26.8, ranking first in the nation. 

In the working report, Director General of Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office Wang Hong said that in 2011, the patent fillings in the whole city reached 77,955, up 36.1%; patent grants hit 40,888, increasing by 22%. Applications for invention patents accounted for about 60% of the gross applications, service patent applications took up over 80%. 

Till now, Beijing obtains 340,000 effective registered trademarks, of which 517 were Beijing Famous Trademarks and 127 were China Well-known Trademarks. Beijing Municipal Copyright Bureau has completed software legalization inspection and rectification work in 1,236 governmental departments. 

“We also see the shortcomings in IP cause while noticing the achievement.” Wang Hong pointed out that Beijing also had a long way to go in increasing IP amount and lifting IP quality. Patent infringement and piracy still exist and IP protection issue is more severe in creative industry. 

As for the IP work focus of Beijing this year, Wang Hong disclosed in his report that Beijing IPO would join hands with Beijing Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department to formulate Action Plan for IP Campaign in Creative Industry of Beijing, aiming to investigate patent situation in creative industry, solve IP-related problems and propose decision-making comments and suggests to Beijing Municipal People’s Government. [Chinese version is available on ynet.com]
