Trademark applications in China breaking 10mln

2012/04/16

As of March 29, 2012, China has seen its trademark applications and grants reach 10,000,346 and 6,892,999 respectively, maintaining the global leader in this regard, according to latest statistics released by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC).

In recent years, trademark registration applications in China have been growing steadily and rapidly, topping the world for ten successive years.

The nation's applications have exceeded one million for two successive years. In 2011, the amount hit a historic high record of 1,416,800, up 32% over 2010 and doubling the figure in 2008.

In addition, 288,900 filings were submitted in the first quarter of 2012, increasing by 7.7% on a year-on-year basis.

In a bid to provide high quality services to mark applicants, the SAIC has taken a series of measures to increase the service awareness of its staff and modernize its processing systems.

Meanwhile, it has optimized its online service via China Trademark Website to provide more convenience to domestic and foreign applicants.

Furthermore, as a result of the improved trademark review mechanism, the review period has been shortened from 36 months in 2008 to within 10 months now, conforming to the international standard.

The soaring figure of the trademark applications is considered as a prominent milestone in China's trademark development history, also a sign of the further implementation of trademark strategies and the enhanced protection of trademark proprietary rights.

Both governments and enterprises have been more aware of a fact that the implementation of trademark strategies and the cultivation of self-owned brands will greatly step up the healthy economic development. The benefits generated by effective trademark registration and protection have significantly stimulated the enthusiasm of the applicants.

At a time when trademarks are deemed to be a strong drive to the country's economy, the SAIC will seize the opportunity and double its efforts to improve trademark laws and regulations as well as working and service mechanisms to boost handling efficiency and enhance the national strength in this area. [Chinese version is available on cicn.com.cn]
