29 million copies of pirated publications destroyed in China

"Unified destruction starts!" announced Li Changjiang, deputy head of National Working Group on Eliminating Pornography and Illegal Publications, raising the curtain of destruction of pirated and illegal publications in 2012.  

The destruction activity was held on April 24 at Beijing No. 18 Middle School and participated by deputy director of the General Administration of Press and Publication Sun Shoushan and vice major of Beijing Lu Wei. Officials handed over flags to IPR protection volunteer college students.

To welcome the 12th World Intellectual Property Day on April 26 and present results achieved in the fight against pornography and illegal Publications as well as piracy, the Working Group on Eliminating Pornography and Illegal Publications held the destruction activity in 31 provinces (regions, cities) at the same time, a sign of the country's determination to protect IPR. Meanwhile, the "Green Bookmark Action", under the slogan of "Refuse piracy, promote innovation", also kicked off.  

More than 29 million pieces of pirated audio-visual product and books as well as unauthorized electronic publications and newspapers and periodicals were destroyed, 1.4 million copies of which were destroyed in Beijing.  

Sun Shoushan said in his speech the Chinese Government insists on protecting IPR and combating piracy. According to statistics, in April 2011 to March 2012, 38.362 million copies of pirated publications were seized and 7,815 piracy cases were investigated. He stressed that in order to protect IPR and combat piracy, the National Working Group on Eliminating Pornography and Illegal Publications, jointly with the General Administration of Press and Publication, the National Copyright Administration and CCTV, hosted the "Green Bookmark Action". In each destruction site, workers handed out green bookmarks and carried out a signature campaign to promote the spirit of advocating innovation and abiding laws in the whole society.

Lu Wei said Beijing municipal government attaches great importance to IPR protection, resolutely implements the central spirit and enhances it to the same strategic level as implementing scientific development concept, building an innovative city and promoting industrial structure upgrading and economic development mode shift. Since 2011, Beijing has carried out 19 remediation actions, investigated over 500 cases of illegal publication, and confiscated more than 1.4 million pieces of illegal publications.

The writer Yu Dan, on behalf of copyright owners, called for the general public, especially students in middle and primary schools, to resist piracy, consciously increase awareness of IPR protection and protect the legal rights of copyright holders.  

Zhou Huilin, deputy director of the National Working Group on Eliminating Pornography and Illegal Publications presided over the ceremony in the main venue of Beijing. More than 500 people participated in the activities.
