Tianjin Binhai Hi-tech Industrial Development Area honored as a state-level IP demonstration park

The State Intellectual Property Office recently named Tianjin Binhai Hi-tech Industrial Development Area as one of the first group of ten state-level intellectual property demonstration parks, which also includes Beijing Zhongguancun Hi-tech Park and Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park.

Currently, the average annual growth rate of patent applications in Binhai Area hit 45% and the number of patent applications in the area doubled over the past five years. In 2006, the area established a special fund on intellectual property which has rendered a total of 10 million yuan in assisting patenting activities. In 2012, patents in force owned by hi-tech enterprises in the area reached 7,388, accounting for 41% of the total held by the area. The area also topped its peers across the nation in the number of invention patents held by every ten thousand people. In addition, there are now a total of 21 intellectual property service agencies operated in the area.

The State Intellectual Property Office advised the area to make full use of its advantage in geographic location and policies to facilitate the integration of intellectual resources and capital, and guide entities to file international applications.

Enterprises which play an increasingly important role in creating innovations have submitted up to 80% patent applications in the area in recent years. The area has been exerting all efforts in assisting local enterprises to capitalize their patents by means such as encouraging them to collateralize their patents.

In 2013, Binhai Area plans to bring in 15 to 20 advanced research institutions, newly identify 5 to 10 state and municipal level research and development agencies and enrourage local enterprises to file 6,000 morepatent applications. 5 to 10 key enterprises will be selected as pilot entities in terms of brand building.
