Up to now, geographical indications (GI) administered by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) have reached 1,441, serving foreign trade and economy more effectively, reported from AQSIQ.

AQSIQ made new achievements in GI protection in 2012, accepting 162 GI applications and awarding 140 grants, which remained basically stable compared to 2011. AQSIQ provided a broad range of services to encourage leading enterprises to register and use GIs, such as offering them subject-oriented consultations and technical trainings, helping them protect rights and build demonstration zones and encouraging them to cooperate with international partners to enhance their international competitiveness.

In terms of GI protection abroad, the "10 plus 10" project, which was launched by AQSIQ and aimed at mutually ensuring protection of 10 famous EU food names in China and 10 famous Chinese food names in EU, has been finalized in 2012. It created a specialized GI protection model through international bilateral cooperation and displayed China’s GI protection systems and their industrial effectiveness, raising the visibility of GI protection home and abroad and promoting a sustainable economic and social development.
