NCAC reports on its “Sword Net Action”

2014/01/09

The National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) hosted a press conference on December 30, 2013 jointly with other three agencies, centering on the special campaign dubbed “Sword Net Action” against online piracy and infringement. Yu Cike, director general of the copyright department under NCAC reported on the results achieved in 2013.

The action was accomplished in a professional, social and international approach. A total of 512 complaints were filed, with 190 cases settled administratively and 93 transferred to judicial organs; 137 sets of servers and associated equipments were confiscated and 201 websites were closed down. NCAC and its local subordinates took 1,906 websites under supervision, which effectively curbed online infringement and piracy.

The action last year took case investigation as the priority, covering a range of sectors such as music, film and television and software. Influential cases handled by the NCAC, including the Baidu case, the QVOD case among others, were listed into the top 10 cases settled during the action.

Last year, the NCAC expanded its supervision to 25 websites and developed the Opinions on Further Strengthening Supervision on the Copyright of Works Distributed on the Internet, improving the long-term mechanism of supervision on online copyright.

This year will welcome a new round of action while 9 rounds have been taken since 2005.
