Beijing leads in invention patents

The ownership of invention patents in Beijing reached 4,040 per million people last year, ranking it first in the country and almost 10 times the national average – 402 per million people, according to a recent announcement issued by the city’s intellectual property authority.


This achievement was due to the significant progress in intellectual property practices among the most innovative personnel in local enterprises, colleges and universities, as well as research institutes.


In 2013, they filed about 123,300 patent applications and the number of granted patents reached 62,600, seeing a year-on-year increase of 33.6 percent and 24.1 percent respectively.


Among the three groups, local enterprises accounted for the biggest portion with their applications amounting to 79,698, up 45.6 percent from the previous year.


With 13,028 patent applications, colleges and universities in Beijing saw an increase of 10 percent from the year before.


In addition, research institutes applied for 12,287 patents last year, rising 14.1 percent year-on-year, while the number of individual patent applications reached 17,015, witnessing a year-on-year increase of 21.4 percent.
