Alibaba purchasing patents in large-scale: maybe preparing for IPO

According to the data from a market research company Envision IP, Alibaba Group has obtained 102 U.S. patents including 20 patents purchased from IBM last year to date. The data from United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shows that Alibaba has also applied for over 300 other technology patents, such as payment process, product recommendations, image search etc. Alibaba indicated before that the company would prepare for IPO in the U.S., with the financing amount over 16 billion dollars which was the financing amount for IPO of Facebook in 2012. Although Alibaba hasn’t yet disclosed the details, the insider said that it was possible for the company to sell 12% shares.
