As of the end of 2013, Shanghai has held 48,370 invention patents in force, a 20% year-on-year increase with an average of 20.3 invention patents owned by every ten thousand residents, according to Shanghai Intellectual Property Office.

Enterprises play an increasingly important role in creating innovations in the city. The top three companies held 414, 258 and 206 patent grants separately, a fact indicating an improved protection awareness of enterprises.

In 2013, the amount of patent pledged financing in the city reached 1.02 billion yuan, 5.8 times more than that of 2012. Besides the improved patent utilization capability, the patent structure has also been modified. Applications on inventions, utility models and designs took up 45%, 41% and 14% respectively. The proportion of invention patents was 10% more than that of the national average level, hitting an historical high record. Service and non-service patents accounted for 87% and 13% separately.
