Jordan joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2000, becoming its 136th member. In 2001, it entered the U.S.- Jordan Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the first such agreement between the United States and an Arab trading partner. In fact, Jordan passed several new laws to improve protection of intellectual property rights prior to its accession to the WTO.
