Coach Seeks 500,000 from Shanghai Market Landlord

Shanghai Longhua Fashion and Gift Market, nicknamed Xiangyanglu II, found itself entangled with an American fashion giant recently. After discovering counterfeit Coach products for sale in Longhua, the U.S. designer filed case to Luwan District People's Court in Shanghai.

Coach said its namesake trademark was registered with the Trademark Office under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce on September 28, 1999. Finding many shops in Longhua distributing products counterfeit that trademark, it sent a cease and desist letter to Longhua. One month later, however, there were still many shops carrying counterfeits. Coach claimed Longhua facilitated distribution of counterfeit products on purpose and sought injunction, removal of ill impact and 500,000 yuan in damages.

Coach is no stranger in asserting its right in Shanghai. In July this year, it sued another market operator Xingwang before Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court. The U.S. luxury company might start its own round of trademark war in Shanghai following LV.
