Customs captures 207 million suspected items in first 3 quarters

On November 18, National Symposium on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Protection in Foreign Capital Commercial Institutions was held in Chongqing and representatives of each governmental department and commission made speeches on the situation of IPR protection in related fields. Deputy Director of Policy and Regulations Department of General Administration of Custom Wang Yongshui disclosed that, suspected items captured by customs in the first 3 quarters were about 207 million yuan.

Wang said protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) is a key function of customs under new economic and social development situation; China is among the few countries carrying out IPR protection in exporting which received positive effects. Since 2000, the increasing rate for cases of infringements investigated by customs across the country keeps at 30% or more; by now, recordation applications of Intellectual Property Rights received by customs are over 22,000 and 3300 were newly added for the first 9 months this year which was 12% higher than last year. From January to September in 2009, 43,481 batches of suspected items are captured by customs, involving 34 million infringing products, worth 207 million yuan.
