China: nearly 1,000 GI products protected

It is learnt from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine that as of September 2009, the said bureau had received 1,070 pieces of GI protection applications. Of these applications, 1,058 were domestic applications and 12 were international GI applications. At the same time, 932 domestic GI products got special protection and the products covered distilled spirit, wine, yellow wine, tea, fruits, flowers, craftworks, condiment, Chinese traditional medicine materials, aquatic products and meat from 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
According to the principal from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, since the issuance of China’s first GI regulation, i.e. Regulations of Protection of the Products of Designations of Origin, ten years has passed. The quality supervision departments made great efforts in protecting GI products. GI special protection system is becoming an effective method in protecting GI IPRs, improving the quality of products with characteristics and promoting regional economic development and foreign trade.
