FDA approval opens up new markets for innovative endoscope

2010/04/21

Independently developed by the Chongqing Jinshan Science and Technology (Group) Co Ltd (CJST), the OMOM capsule endoscope, a new kind of non-invasive and painless intelligent diagnostic instrument for digestive diseases, will now be available in an increased number of countries following approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States.

As one of CJST's key products, the OMOM capsule endoscope is suitable for the diagnosis of digestive diseases and for use in physical examinations. Compared with traditional endoscopy techniques, the OMOM capsule endoscope has the advantages of wider vision, accurate operation and high levels of patient safety. It is also said to offer less discomfort for patients compared to other systems, whilst having unique applications in small intestinal diagnosis usage.

The OMOM capsule endoscope system comprises four units - an intelligent capsule, an image recorder, a video workstation and a handheld wireless monitor. The patient simply needs to ingest the intelligent capsule, which will move within the patient's digestive tract via gastrointestinal muscle motility. It will then record a video of the digestive tract wall so that the doctor can detect images and control the image parameters of the capsule in real time. Ultimately, the intelligent capsule will evacuate the body naturally.

With these superior and unique advantages, the governing body of the CJST believes that owning the intellectual property rights is very important for them in their bid to expand the market, especially the international market.

The CJST has now acquired domestic and foreign patents for more than 50 items relating to the system and acquired entitlement for 19 further items.

In 2008, the output value of OMOM capsule endoscopy reached 400 million yuan, representing a domestic market share of over 95 percent. According to authoritative sources, the output value of this new kind of endoscopy will reach a higher level still. It has now been entered on the medical insurance list of Chongqing municipality, Jiangsu, Shanxi and other provinces.
Up to now, the OMOM capsule endoscope is the only one of its kind to have been listed in the United Nations Procurement Catalog. It is also included in the foreign aid program of the National Commerce Department.

The OMOM capsule endoscope system has now been put into clinical use in more than 1,000 hospitals across the world, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Russia, India, Brazil and another 58 countries and regions.
