China: Domestic patent applications increase by 22.4%

On the occasion of the two anniversaries of the implementation of Outline on National IP Strategy, the relevant principal from the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) expressed when being interviewed that, in the past two years, under the collaboration of the Ministerial Joint Meeting on National Intellectual Property Strategy, IP strategy work across the nation advanced steadily. To be detailed, the number of indigenous intellectual property rights kept fast increasing, a group of advantageous enterprises with indigenous IP rights and strong risk resistant capability emerged and took the lead in breaking IP obstacles, which exerted outstanding role in promoting the good and fast development of economy and society of China.
The year 2009 is the first year to boost National IP Strategy. The work mechanism on carrying out national IP strategy was preliminarily set up and consummated. 28 member units of the Ministerial Joint Meeting on National Intellectual Property Strategy made concerted effort and jointly instituted and promulgated yearly promotion plan of national IP strategy. All the departments worked out and revised 54 relevant IP laws and regulations, promulgated 82 policies and measures, launched 24 IP enforcement behaviors and established 28 public service platforms.
Guided by the Outline on National IP Strategy and a broad range of policies and measures, the ability of China in IP use, protection and management was further raised. In 2009, China accepted 977,000 items of patent applications in all. Domestic patent applications rose by 22.4% and patent applications submitted to the SIPO by foreigners decreased by 10.9%. Applications for trademark registration were 830,000 items, up 18.9%. The recorded copyright works were 403,000 items. The recorded software copyrights were 71,000 items, rising by 44.6%. The applications for plant variety rights were 1,033 items, increasing by 9.3%. The applications for integrated circuit layout design were 817 items, up 9.9%.
