Global Community of Shared Challenges

2010/11/12

Editor's note: The following is the closing speech of the International CEO Roundtable of Chinese and Foreign Multinational Corporations by Zheng Wantong, CPPCC vice-chairman, chairman of the roundtable organizing committee, and president of the China International Council for the Promotion of Multinational Corporations.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

With support from the organizing committee and all representatives, the fourth International CEO Roundtable of Chinese and Foreign Multinational Corporations is concluding successfully.

At this year's session, more than 70 guests held discussions around the theme "promoting multinational corporations' investment, strengthening corporate social responsibility and facilitating sustainability development".

This roundtable has been a successful meeting to exchange ideas, seek consensus, promote understanding and enhance friendship.

We have received good feedback from many guests who said the conference was successful and impressive, and I personally felt the same way.

We would like to thank Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang and government leaders from the ministries and commissions for their clear explanation about the situation and trends in China's economic and social development as well as related policies and measures.

Vice-Premier Zhang's address at the opening ceremony was very encouraging. As he pointed out, Chinese companies and foreign partners have achieved truly win-win cooperation, setting an example for global investment and cooperation.

China's progress will promote foreign-funded companies to expand investment here and deepen cooperation between both sides. The prospect is bright and broad.

Chinese government leaders also noted that China will take measures to prevent and control financial risks while actively boosting financial innovation.

Some foreign friends expressed concerns about the protection of intellectual property and the market environment in China. Responding to these concerns, guests from related ministries said the Chinese government have already implemented fruitful practice in the area and will continue to attach great importance to IPR issues.

We would like to also thank UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon and some UN organizations and the representatives in China, for their wonderful observations and ideas that contributed greatly to the conference.

Renata Lok-Dessallien, UN resident coordinator and UNDP resident representative in China, said that she wished more Chinese companies could recognize the principle of compact and the idea of responsibility. We agree with her, and we believe that it is the inner demand of China's market economy.

Former Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Peter Mandelson noted that an open economy is important to the prosperity of the world while protectionism cannot solve any problem.

He also said frankly that some people make the mistake of viewing China merely as a market instead of a society under tremendous changes. China is in a huge economic and social transition, trying to narrow the gap from the developed countries in terms of knowledge and technology. Yet some Westerners are worried about China's rising economic and political force.

Just as Mr Mandelson said, it needs time and dialog to bridge differences. We should have more such dialog, no matter between politicians or business leaders, no matter in Europe or in China.

We also appreciate the advanced ideas brought by leaders of Fortune 500 companies. Their global vision and sharing spirit are respected. The company leaders said talent is crucial for enterprises, and the "glass ceiling" should be broken to let more Chinese talent enter senior management of multinational companies. They also advised Chinese entrepreneurs to build good company culture and let foreign managers to fully play their role.

We also salute domestic entrepreneurs and scholars for their instructive ideas and suggestions. Low-carbon development is the most concerning topic at this conference. And guests shared the consensus that construction of low-carbon cities in China should be coordinated with the process of industrialization and rising information technology, in which Chinese culture should also play a positive role.

All the entrepreneurs pointed out in the conference that the international financial crisis revealed the disadvantages of the old world economic order. And they called for convergence and co-development of regional economies to avoid one country dominating the global economy.

We are glad to see that in the forum this morning, company representatives generally paid much attention to corporate social responsibility. We also noticed that many foreign companies are thinking to better localize and they have already made great contribution in education and medical service in China.

Chinese companies should also take initiative to implement social responsibilities in improving the economy, promoting employment and protecting the environment in the overseas countries where they do businesses.

Meanwhile, we also heard suggestions from the attendees about the organization of this conference. We will surely collect these suggestions and improve our work in the future to better service the exchange and dialog between China and international community, between governments and enterprises, between government departments and non-government organizations, and build the roundtable a renowned brand!

Now, on behalf of the organizing committee, let me thank again for the support of all the present guests and friends, for the effort of all staff, and for the work of all media.

Guests and friends, let's remember the harvest and treasure the friendship - let's gather again next year.
