Peking Opera declares for intangible cultural heritage

2010/11/25

UNESCO’s meeting in Kenya attracted much attention because the candidates for the "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage" include China’s Peking Opera and acupuncture. It is learnt that the results will be announced the day after tomorrow Beijing time. Peking Opera, following Kunqu and Guqin, is very likely to be listed in the UNESCO’s "Intangible Cultural Heritage List" .

Division Chief of Beijing Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center Qian Rong said that Peking Opera declared for world intangible cultural heritage because it has been passed down for over a hundred years and the emphasis is laid on 'inheritance'. The declaration does not mean that the opera is declining. It is for better development and protection.
