2011/04/07

In an attempt to compete with Google's Android, China Unicom introduced WoPhone, its first independently-developed smartphone operating system platform, on March 1.

The ceremony was held in Beijing yesterday, and the first WoPhone is expected to hit the market within less than a month.

China Unicom, the chief developer of this breakthrough mobile phone milestone, designed the brand new cellular operating system to be optimized not only for smartphones but also for other terminals, such as tablet and TV sets.

The WoPhone platform, independent intellectual property rights owned by China, is supportive of a variety of security modules in industries, such as financing, security, medical and health and transportation.

A researcher from China Unicom pointed out that the birth of the WoPhone and its system is meaningful in smashing up the foreign firms' monopoly over the smart terminal operating system, and it will ensure the security of the Internet and customers' privacy.

China Unicom said it will launch a developer community and mobile application download platform within the next few days.
