2011/04/14

By the end of 2010, valid trademarks in 12 western provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in China have totaled 453 thousand, in which, 266 thousand were registered in the last three years, which was 1.2 times that of the cumulative figure from 1990 to 2007, according to information from a forum entitled “Measures to promote trademark strategies and facilitate the Grand Western Development Program” convened by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and Shaanxi provincial government in Xi’an on April 7.

Compared with the situation in eastern China, trademarks development in western China still has a gap. According to statistics, by the end of 2010, in the 12 western provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), 11 million business operators, which accounted for a quarter of the total amount in China, owned only 453 thousand valid trademarks, which were less than 10% of the total amount across the country.

In 2010, Shaanxi received 16 thousand trademark registrations, which have doubled the number in 2009. Among the trademarks, 475 were recognized as Shaanxi famous trademarks; while 7 geographical indications and 6 Chinese famous trademarks were newly registered in the province.

By the end of 2010, the accumulative valid trademarks have amounted to 48,667, in which, 30 were awarded as Chinese famous trademarks and 1,052 were recognized as Shaanxi famous trademarks.

Shaanxi will take measures to promote trademark pledge loans by motivating trademark registrations, rewarding famous trademark owners and establishing trademark implementation pilot locations. In this regard, Shaanxi has set goals to register 100 Chinese famous trademarks, 3,500 Shaanxi famous trademarks, 50 geographical indications and 70 thousand valid trademarks by 2020.
