LOS ANGELES, April 21 (Xinhua) -- A Southern California startup company won a lawsuit over charges it stole secrets from mammoth toymaker Mattel, as it was found to own the right to the highly popular Bratz doll line.

MGA Entertainment, Inc., a Van Nuys-based doll maker, was also awarded 88.4 million U.S. dollars in compensations, according to a verdict given by an eight-member jury Wednesday that capped eight days of deliberations after approximately three months of pretrial.

U.S. District Judge David O. Carter indicated he will reduce the sum of compensations to 85 million dollars, as the jury apparently awarded MGA 3.4 million dollars for the same verdict twice due to an error in the calculations.

Mattel won its civil suit filed against MGA in August 2008 over the creation rights of the Bratz doll line, which alleges that the startup toymaker infringed on its copyright. Mattel was awarded with 100 million dollars in compensations at the time.

However, that ruling was overturned by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which led to the retrial. Mattell said Thursday it will file a motion claiming that the latest verdict was wrong.
