Governments urged to use copyrighted software

BEIJING - China's National Copyright Administration (NCA) said Tuesday it would increase efforts to ensure all government offices at and above city level use copyrighted software by the end of October.

As of the end of May, all computer softwares used by the 135 central government agencies are authorized and legitimate, and the NCA will work to root out pirated software in all province-level government bodies by the end of July, the NCA said in a statement Tuesday.

Local government agencies have finished their inspections of software copyrights and are now negotiating purchasing issues, the statement said.

Local government bodies in Shanghai and six other cities, including the cities of Qingdao and Ji'nan in Shandong Province and Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan Province, have already completed their work to eliminate pirated software in their offices, the statement said.

In the statement, the NCA also said that over the past year copyright authorities across the country have solved 1,148 cases of online piracy in a special campaign to crack down on online copyright violations.

About 70 percent of the cases were solved thanks to reports from the public, said Yu Cike, a senior official of the NCA.

Among the 17 major violations in this year's campaign, court rulings have been handed down in seven of them, and 20 criminals have been convicted and sentenced, the NCA statement said.

The NCA also published details about 15 online copyright violations.
