GAPP Vice Director: China takes measures to curb infringements

2011/06/22

On June 15, Vice Director of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) of the People’s Republic of China and Deputy Director of the National Copyright Administration (NCAC) Yan Xiaohong met with the President and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) Christopher Dodd and his party.

Yan said, like the rest of the world, copyright industry in China also faces a new challenge, i.e. online infringement and piracy. Nowadays, Chinese government has taken two measures to crack down upon Internet piracy. First, amend laws and regulations; second, enhance copyright supervisory work, especially video websites. The NCAC has launched regular and active supervision over 18 large-scaled video websites.

Christopher Dodd thanked GAPP for its long-lasting support to MAPP and believed that China’s special campaign against online infringement and piracy played a positive role in copyright protection and innovation encouragement. He thought that cultural creative industry will have much room to development in China since Chinese government regards such industry as one of the important pillars of national economy.

The two sides also made in-depth discussion on how to recognize piracy and how to curb infringement and piracy. They both regarded that piracy is not only the infringement of tangible assets of copyright holders but a theft of intangible assets. So piracy must be fight against mercilessly.
