"Stop ACTA" demonstration takes place in Budapest

2012/02/13

BUDAPEST, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Over a thousand people took part in a demonstration against the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in Budapest on Saturday.

The protest took place outside the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office and was attended by many young people chanting anti-ACTA slogans.

The Hungarian government was one of 22 of the 27 EU member states which signed the agreement on January 26.

The legislation aims to create an international standard for intellectual property rights, copyright infringement and the restriction of trade in counterfeited goods. Its opponents, however, say it will have a damaging impact on the openness of the internet.
