Hainan: Haikou Customs uncovered 48 IPR infringement cases

2012/05/02

During the IPR Protection Publicity Week from April 20 to 26, Haikou Customs in Hainan Province organized a range of activities themed "cultivating IPR culture and promoting social innovation and development". Since last year, Haikou Customs has uncovered 48 IPR infringement cases and seized 786 pieces of infringing goods in import and export channels, involving over 20 international renowned brands such as GUCCI, CHANEL, D&G, ADIDAS and CK. The detained articles centered around clothing, shoes, hats, bags, sunglasses, watches and auto parts.

Last year, Haikou Customs launched the special campaign against IPR infringement and the manufacture and sales of counterfeit and shoddy goods. This year they carried out another special action against inward and outward IPR infringement. By strengthening the supervision over import and export goods, postal items as well as baggage and articles carried by inward and outward passengers, Haikou customs uncovered dozens of typical IPR infringement cases. In January this year, when an official of Haikou Customs checked a postal carton, he found the carton contained 83 pieces of T-shirt, glasses and hats infringing the trademarks of D & G, PRADA and so on. The sender purchased the goods in China and mailed them to relatives studying abroad. As the goods were obviously not limited to reasonable quantities for personal use, customs officials confiscated them.

According to the person in charge of Haikou Customs, customs protect trademarks, copyrights and copyright-related rights and patents which are related with import and export goods and protected by Chinese laws and administrative rules and regulations. If the infringing articles taken or mailed by inward and outward passengers are not limited to reasonable quantities for personal use, customs will detain and treat them accordingly. For those constituting a criminal case, they shall be transferred to public security authorities. Customs warns inward and outward passengers and domestic citizens not to buy counterfeit goods and carry or mail them abroad.
