Global Growth for Rouse with raft of new Executive Promotions

2017/10/10

International IP specialist promotes 24 new equity executives to exploit new and emerging markets

London 9 October 2017

Leading international IP consultancy Rouse has today announced it has promoted 24 new equity executives following the firm’s strong performance in the financial year to April 2017.

The promotions further consolidate the firm’s position as the leading provider of IP services in emerging markets globally.

The increase in the number of equity executives, to 52, is spread across Rouse’s global network of offices, including Moscow, Dubai, Bangkok, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, London and Hanoi.

Having entered many challenging markets long in advance of other western organisations, Rouse now operates more than 16 offices across multiple continents, with a new outpost in South East Asia set to open soon.

The new cohort of executives has been drawn from across a wide range of different business functions, including professionals from the company’s IT, finance and HR disciplines, in addition to fee-earners.

The promotions have in part been driven by five years of consistent growth and operational improvement. However, the move is also the result of the company’s longer-term plan to diversify its leadership base – geographically and in terms of skillset – in order to seize new growth opportunities and inspire future generations of leaders from within the business.

A full list of those promoted is included below.

Luke Minford, Chief Executive, Rouse, said:
“These promotions signify the ambition, innovation and sense of opportunity that defines Rouse. This new Executive group is the most diverse it could be, in geography, in culture, in skill and experience.

“We have always positioned talented people at the heart of our business and these promotions represent a huge step towards building the leadership pipeline we, and our clients, need for the long term. This is a period of significant growth for Rouse – with further growth and expansion to come – and we could not be more excited.”

Rupert Ross-Macdonald, Chairman, Rouse, said: “We’ve always wanted to ensure that our ownership base truly reflects the strength and depth we have across the whole Rouse business. It’s a core component of our future strategy, and something our clients have always singled out as a key ingredient in Rouse. This is a wonderful group of people, who bring a diversity of talent and culture that will only strengthen our hand. We see the scale and range of these promotions as representing one of the most exciting steps forward in the firm’s history.”

Q&A

Such a significant percentage increase in new equity executives is rare. Is this a capital call in disguise?

Not at all. We have just experienced our strongest year of growth to date on the back of five consecutive years of performance improvement. The company is in robust financial health. This move represents the fulfilment of a long-term ambition to diversify our leadership base and position the firm well to achieve further growth, not least across emerging markets in which we specialise.

Why have you decided to include non-legal functions in the equity pool?
In addition to diversifying our leadership team geographically and culturally, we have been critically aware of the need to diversify in terms of skill sets in leadership positions. New and increasing competitive pressures within the market require us to think broadly and creatively about how we can best manage our business and deliver value to clients. Expanding our ownership pool into different business functions enables us to do this better than ever.

What will be the impact on PEP?

Firstly, we are not a firm that recruits or retains talent based on PEP benchmarks. For us, the critical issues are long term sustainability, quality of clients, growth, and working environment. We believe this decision to expand our Executive base strengthens our business in all of these areas and comes with the unanimous support of existing Executives.

Rouse has offices in certain jurisdictions where local law firm affiliation is required in order to provide the full range of services. How does the executive structure work in these circumstances?
Rouse operates as a global network consisting of its own consultancy business and a closely connected group of independent law firms in the countries in which law firm capability is required. These local firms have chosen to work within the Rouse network for many years in order to benefit from the consultancy services, the client referrals, the management expertise and know-how that Rouse provides.

Rouse’ UK business ceased to be a law firm and became a consultancy in February 2017? How does this relate to these new promotions?

All Executives will become Members of Rouse & Co International (Holdings) LLP, headquartered in London. This is the parent of Rouse & Co International Ltd (our consultancy business in the UK) as well as of the other Rouse companies around the world.
